Digestive upset occasionally happens, even in healthy kittens and adult cats. A change in diet, stress, travel, hairballs, or minor gastrointestinal irritation can sometimes lead to temporary constipation or loose stools.
One simple ingredient that many veterinarians recommend for mild digestive support is pumpkin.
Why pumpkin?
Plain pumpkin is naturally rich in soluble fiber, which can help regulate the digestive tract by absorbing excess water during mild diarrhea or adding moisture and bulk during mild constipation.
Because pumpkin is gentle and easy to digest, it is commonly used as a short-term dietary supplement for cats experiencing minor digestive changes.
When might pumpkin help?
Pumpkin may be beneficial for:
- Mild constipation
- Mild diarrhea
- Temporary digestive upset
- Hairball-related digestive issues
- Minor dietary transitions
Pumpkin is not a cure for illness and should never replace veterinary care if your cat is showing signs of significant illness.
What kind of pumpkin should you use?
Only use:
- Plain canned pumpkin (100% pumpkin)
- Pumpkin supplements formulated specifically for cats
Avoid pumpkin pie filling or products containing added sugar, spices, sweeteners, or artificial ingredients.
My recommendation
One product I have used and recommend is Weruva Pumpkin Patch Up! It is convenient, easy to serve, and formulated specifically for dogs and cats. Individual pouches make portioning simple and reduce waste compared to opening an entire can of pumpkin.
Plain canned pumpkin is also an excellent option and works just as well for most cats.
When should you call your veterinarian?
Pumpkin is intended only for mild digestive upset.
Contact your veterinarian promptly if your kitten or cat has:
- Repeated vomiting
- Bloody diarrhea
- Severe diarrhea lasting more than 24 hours
- Constipation that does not improve
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy
- Abdominal pain
- Dehydration
Young kittens can become dehydrated quickly, so persistent digestive problems should always be evaluated by a veterinarian.
A helpful addition—not a cure
Pumpkin can be a useful item to keep in your pet care supplies and may help support normal digestion during minor digestive disturbances. However, it should always be used as part of an overall approach to your cat’s health rather than as a substitute for proper veterinary care.
When in doubt, contact your veterinarian for guidance.
